Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost
Transition Update from your Vestry

As we noted in last week’s update, we continue to work with the Diocese to select and call an interim priest to lead our congregation during the period of discernment (normally one to two years) prior to calling a new full-time rector to St. John’s.  Our process is guided by a comprehensive manual* from the Diocese based on the past experiences and best practices of other congregations. We are making good progress on this step and hope to have more specifics to share with you in the very near future.

This past Tuesday, your Parish Council met in the Gathering to get updates on what’s happening in our ministries, communicate upcoming key events and celebrate our successes.

Are you interested in exploring new opportunities to serve at St. John’s? In the coming months each of these ministries will be making presentations so you will be aware of the  many opportunities available. St. John’s is truly blessed with incredibly talented and gifted members.

For pastoral care issues that may arise in the weeks to come, please call Senior Warden Shelley Zalewski at 248-756-2420. Aided by a priest in the area and/or a SJP Eucharistic Visitor, we will work to address the need promptly.

SJP OUTREACH MINISTRIES

CROSSROADS SOUP KITCHEN
SUNDAY, SEPT. 17~9am-12pm
WE STILL NEED VOLUNTEERS!
Does your youth need community hours? Do you often say I would really like to do something like this? This is a good time to participate! We'll be preparing chili, hot dogs & packaging cookies from 9am-12pm at Crossroads in Detroit. Carpool from the church at 8:30am is available. Please contact  Dick Bass at 248-245-4560 if you'd like to participate!

SMALL BUT MIGHTY:
THE SJP FOOD PANTRY
Our Food Pantry is on a roll – providing an increasing number of needy local families with essential grocery and household products. Through early September, 205 families (that’s more than 800 people!) were provided with 685 bags of groceries through the SJP Food Pantry in 2017.

We need your help to keep this momentum going! It’s easy to play a part in this vital ministry: check out the board in the Narthex where current donation needs are posted. Take one or more of the cards from the board as a reminder for your next grocery trip; then bring the item or items back to SJP and place them in the red wagon.

Many thanks to our Food Pantry volunteers: Teri & Dave Long (co-chairs), Tracy Hallisy, Cecilia Haslam, Irene Jarrell, Lu Pilgrim, and Vicki Pratt. Many thanks to Teri & Dave for planting and harvesting the garden (behind the youth house) and also picking up Panera Bread on each Monday evening to be able to share these extra items with visitors to the pantry!

Want to learn more or volunteer to help in the pantry?  Contact the parish office for more information.
