  The Third Sunday in Lent
Message from Pastor Dana

Your vestry met on retreat this past weekend. It didn’t even snow! Friday evening they got to know one another, prayed for each other, and were oriented by the wardens Mark and April around roles and responsibilities and by the treasurer Beth around finances.  Saturday morning the focus was the purpose of St. John’s. They studied documents of the church, the vision of Presiding Bishop Michael Curry about being the Episcopal branch of the Jesus movement, the importance of clarity around purpose, and immersed themselves in separate chapters from the book of Acts about how God and people are moving during the early days of the Jesus movement.

Three groups, limited to twelve words each, arrived at the following three statements:

God’s purpose for SJP is…’

… to be an all-inclusive community of dedicated worshippers striving to teach God’s Word.

…to be an inquisitive, inclusive community following Jesus and enriching lives by serving others.

….to welcome all, spread God’s unconditional love, compassionately serve, and nurture holy curiosity through community.

You’ll notice there is much convergence amongst these three statements. Now we will be sitting with them, praying with them, over them and through them for a time. The next step will be to find even fewer words to capture the essence of these statements – few enough words that everyone who worships at St. John’s will be able to walk away and repeat and engage the mission/purpose of this community of faith. Guiding principles will be discerned out of this work as well, to help direct you down the road as you face the challenges of being church these days.

In the afternoon we reviewed the “Discovery Process” that charts a path forward. In light of your purpose, your next faithful step will be discovered where your identity, your internal context, and your external context intersect. At the end of Saturday, folks felt “thankful,” “hopeful,” “inspired,” and “tired.” I am very excited about what is ahead for you. God has blessed you with a wonderful, dedicated, committed group of leaders to see this through– with your prayerful and participatory support.

Faithfully,
Pastor Dana

Thank You, Phyllis!

Our parish administrator, Phyllis Ikegami, has resigned effective March 31, when the full-time position she holds reverts to a part time parish office manager position. We are grateful for Phyllis’s grace and professionalism as we all navigate the challenge of this “transition within a transition.” We hope you will stop in the office and express your thanks to Phyllis for her faithful service to St. John’s these past two plus years. On Sunday, March 18 the vestry invites you to a reception/coffee hour in her honor, following the 10am service, to thank Phyllis and bid her a fond farewell. Please join us!
